More about ToysRUs

Toys “R” Us is an American toy retailer, headquartered in Wayne, New Jersey. It was founded by Charles Lazarus in 1948. It all began when Charles began selling baby furniture out of his father’s bicycle shop when he came back from the Army. This was two years after the beginning of the baby boom and Lazarus focused on attracting customers of the families of GIs coming home from World War II.

His began carrying rattles and stuffed animals within a year at his customer’s request to sell baby toys. Soon, he was receiving requests for toys for older children. The bike shop was renamed to the Children’s Market. He opened a baby furniture store in Washington, DC, named Children’s Bargain town. In 1957, Charles changed his focus from baby furniture and Toys “R” Us was born in Rockville, Maryland, which was the first store to bear the name Toys “R” Us. He designed his stores similar to a supermarket format which enabled him to stock a broader assortment of products and customers to serve them self utilizing shopping carts he provided. Toys were literally stacked high on shelves in every aisle.

By 1965 Lazarus owned and operated four stores in the Washington, DC area, and the next year, sales increased to the $12 million mark. Although he sold his business to Interstate Stores, Inc in 1966, he continued to manage the toy chain. Interstate Stores Inc had financial troubles and was forced to declare bankruptcy in 1974. They emerged from their bankruptcy in 1978 with 63 toy stores, and renamed their company to Toys “R” Us. Lazarus continued to lead the company.

Geoffrey, their mascot giraffe, claimed celebrity status, when he was featured in a Toys “R” Us television commercial in 1973. He is still featured in all of the Toys “R” Us stores.

In the 1980’s Toys “R” Us introduced their first apparel store Kids “R” Us. They also ventured internationally and opened Canada and Singapore. Their sales also surpassed $1 billion in this decade.

In the 1990’s they launched their first Babies “R” Us stores. They acquired Baby Superstore in 1997 and converted these 78 stores to Babies “R” Us. Toys “R” Us also entered the e-Commerce market.

Today Toys “R” Us is still a favorite place for children and parents of children to shop. Their colorful warehouse style stores and vast aisles and aisles of toys, books, electronic toys and accessories and the welcoming “it’s okay to try me and play with me” attitude draws many families here to shop.

Toys “R” Us still carries Lazarus’ values, knowing that success was focusing on the everyday shopper, such as a child wanting to spend his or her weekly allowance on that toy they just can’t live without, or a parent searching for that perfect birthday gift. Using the large warehouse style allowed Toys “R” Us to do this, with their vast selection of toys and their great low prices. The stores are just a fun place to shop. Toys “R” Us often has sales and specials both in stores and online. They accept coupons and promo codes online for even deeper discounts.
