More about The Children's Place

Children’s Place Inc. dba The Children’s Place is a chain of retail stores that sells children’s clothing across most of the United States. It was founded by two Harvard Business School graduates, David Pulver and Clinton Clark in 1969.

Both Pulver and Clark agreed that they did not want to work for big corporations, and although they graduated in 1965, it took them a while to figure out what type of business venture they wanted to enter. Some of the options they considered were opening auto repair shops or marketing special meltable crayons. Eventually they decided to focus on a children’s department store and both men felt they knew what children needed.

In 1969, they opened their first The Children’s Place in Hartford, Connecticut. The store sold toys, clothing and accessories. This mix of products was not very successful as many lines were unprofitable. They spent the next few years changing up their merchandise to find their product niche. They finally chose to focus on medium-priced children’s sportswear along with some other brands of kids’ clothing.

Pulver and Clark grew their business by opening more stores in the east. In the first ten years, they had opened 34 stores and their sales were growing by close to 50 percent annually, and actual profits were growing by a third. In the beginning, The Children’s Place had little to no direct competition. Their first stores were generally located in big shopping malls. At that time, children’s clothes could be purchased at the big department stores like J.C. Penney and Sears, but the only small shop that catered to just children’s clothing was The Children’s Place.

By 1981, they nearly doubled their size to 65 stores and sales had soared to over $50 million. The Children’s Place went public in 1981 and they soon were bombarded with merger offers. Pulver and Clark struck a deal with Federated Department Stores to sell their company with stipulations that they did not want to stay on running the company as they still did not want to work for a large corporation. They soon left the company after the purchase took place.

The chain continued to grow in the early 1980’s and they added on average 20 stores a year adding stores mostly to malls across the Northeast and Midwest. But under the new management the The Children’s Place was not as profitable as it had been in previous years. Their troubles continued through the late 1990’s. The company finally changed their marketing plan in 1997. They began selling good quality but value-priced clothing. They set the price of their private label clothing 20 to 30 percent below their competition.

The Children’s Place had finally found their niche to make them profitable again. It was good quality merchandise at a great price. Today, The Children’s Place is the largest pure-play children’s specialty clothing retailer in North America. It owns and operates over 900 stores throughout the US and Puerto Rico, as well as nearly 135 stores in Canada. It also has more than 70 international stores by franchise partners and online stores. You can get some great quality playwear for kids at some really great prices. They have numerous sales and specials both in store and online and for additional savings you can use The Children’s Place coupon codes on their websites.
