More about REI

Recreation Equipment, Inc, more commonly known as REI is an American national outdoor retail and outdoor recreation service corporation. It is organized as a consumers’ co-op and is one of the largest co-ops in the nation. This cooperative is owned by more than 1.7 million member-customers who receive annual dividends in proportion to their patronage in spending.

REI started as a co-op in 1938, founded by Lloyd and Mary Anderson, when a group of Pacific Northwest mountain climbers wanted to find some highly coveted Swiss ice axes. Anderson, an engineer, and president of REI for the first three decades, looked to England for a way to import Swiss ice axes to the United States. Rochdale Equitable Partners Society, an organization established in Rochdale, England, was widely regarded as the originator of the modern cooperative movement. Anderson adopted their principles that guided him to set up a cooperative membership open to all, with each active member being allowed one vote and receiving annual dividends based on proportion of their patronage.

It was a slow process, but REI developed into one of the largest consumer cooperatives in the country and one on the largest retailers in the nation. Their object was not to grow as a big retail chain but to create a way for Seattle climbers to obtain state-of-the-art European climbing equipment at the best prices possible. They actually did not even have a retail location until six years after their formation. In the beginning REI operated out of Lloyd Anderson’s house in West Seattle, but public demand for mountain climbing equipment and hardware led the cooperative to establish their first store in 1944. It was a modest operation with three shelves of merchandise in the back of a gas station in downtown Seattle.

They hired Jim Whittaker in 1953, who was a climbing enthusiast and spent his life scaling the mountains surrounding the Pacific Northwest. About 10 years after he joined REI, he was the first American to reach the summit of Mt. Everest. This achievement drew major attention to REI. Eventually Whittaker became the president of REI and this paved the way for substantial growth for the company.

In the 1980’s, with changes to the Board of Directors, REI changed their focus and no longer catered strictly to mountain climbers. They added family camping, branched out to kayaking, bicycling, sport casual clothing and other outdoor sports. They no longer branded their advertising with the fact that they were a cooperative.

Today REI offers great quality clothing, footwear and gear focused on outdoor recreation including climbing, bicycling, camping, hiking, paddling and winter sports. All of their products are backed by a 100% satisfaction guarantee. They also offer travel packages geared to outdoor sports.

REI has over 140 stores across the nation and has a very popular and profitable online store. You can still join REI cooperative for a small fee and receive dividends based on your patronage. You can shop their traditional stores or online. They have quality merchandise and have sales and specials. REI also makes it easy to use coupon codes online.
