More about Pep Boys

The Pep Boys: Manny, Moe & Jack was branded and commonly known today as just the Pep Boys, is an automotive aftermarket retail and service chain in the United States. The company was founded in 1921 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by Emanuel (Manny) Rosenfeld, Maurice L. (Moe) Strauss, W. Graham (Jack) Jackson, and Moe Radavitz.

It all began when these four World War I Navy buddies realized there was a need and a growing market for auto supply stores due to the previous decade when mass production of automobiles came about. And the four partners came up with $200 each to open their first store in Philly, naming it Pep Auto Supply, which was soon shortened and renamed to Pep Boys. It was a very small store and only the shortest names would fit above the front door.

Their corporate caricatures that would soon become famous throughout the country were drawn by Harry Moskovitch. As the chain grew the Pep Boys were placed on T-shirts, on matchbooks and in cement as statues in front of their stores. Free advertising came through the Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show monologue with Johnny joking about their trademark, parodied on Saturday Night Live and came to life in Claymation for late 1980’s TV ads.

Pep Boys was extremely successful and they had a dozen stores in the Philadelphia area by 1928. Strauss felt California calling him, as he had lived there briefly in the early 1920’s and convinced his partners that this would be an ideal location to expand. In 1933, they ventured west and opened two stores in Los Angeles, California. The chain in Philadelphia had increased to 40 stores at that time.

Pep Boys went public in 1946 with Manny Rosenfeld named president and Moe Strauss was elected chairman of the board. Under their management the chain grew slowly for the next thirty years, as it was their insistence that they own instead of lease the buildings for their new stores. However in the mid 1980’s under new management, Pep Boys experienced a new life line with needed modernization and rapid growth. They closed down 32 small, dingy stores and promptly opened 60 modern stores in the next two years. They also grew to be the second largest aftermarket automotive supply store chain at this time.

In the late 1980’s Pep Boys had a five year plan for substantial growth. During this time frame their number of stores doubled to 337. They also launched an “everyday low price” strategy and added superstores or warehouse format stores with a huge average size of 23,000 square feet. Their new computerized inventory and merchandising control helped them tailor stores with products that were popular for that area, like a country or rural store would have more truck parts and a ritzy downtown area would have more import or luxury car parts and supplies.

Today the company is owned by Icahn Automotive Group LLC, and has more than 8,300 service bays in nearly 930 stores nationwide. They are still headquartered in Philadelphia. Pep Boys provides automotive maintenance and repair, name brand tires, commercial auto parts delivery, fleet maintenance and repair to customers across the country with With Just Brakes a wholly owned subsidiary of the Pep boys, and parts and expert advice for the Do-it-Yourselfer. They are known for their friendly, knowledgeable staff and competitive pricing. They also have an online store if you do not want to go into a traditional brick and mortar store. They have frequents sales on parts and services, offer frequent free shipping promotions on their website, have frequent buyer programs and accept Pep Boys coupon codes.
