More About Orbitz

Orbitz is a travel website that utilizes a metasearch engine to search for the best deals. The website is owned by Orbitz Worldwide, Inc., a subsidiary of Expedia Inc. It was founded in 2001 and is currently headquartered in the Citigroup Center in Chicago, Illinois.

Orbitz was originally established through a group partnership of major airlines in response to the rise of online travel agencies, such as Expedia and Travelocity and to lower airline distribution costs. $145 million was invested by Continental Airlines, Delta Airlines, Northwest Airlines and American Airlines to begin this project in 1999. The code name for this project was T2, which stood for “Travelocity Terminator” but they adopted the brand name Orbitz. The company began Beta testing early the next year and Orbitz was officially launched in June 2001.

Orbitz claimed to have more web-only bargain fares than any other site and they also were able to inform customers of flight cancellations and changes through pagers and mobile phones immediately. Their format also made it easy to search for better airfare at nearby airports. They were a big hit and sold $3.3 million on its first full day, signing up 5,000 new customers in a single Sunday. However, they did have their troubles and soon there were complaints of technical faults and compatibility with older browsers. Spokesman for Orbitz stated it was a smear campaign.

Orbitz went public in 2003 raising $317 million. They expanded their services and slowly started adding lodging reservations with about 39,000 properties, vacation packages from thirty different providers, cruises from eighteen cruise lines and car rentals from about 25 different companies. It slowly evolved to a one-stop destination to make trip planning easy.

Orbitz still makes the majority of its revenue from airline ticket sales, about 70 percent. Despite of the legal controversies that have followed Orbitz since its inception, Orbitz is still very successful.

Today, Orbitz is a leading travel website where users can search for and book a broad range of flights, hotels, car rentals, cruises, vacation packages and destination activities. They also offer their groundbreaking Orbitz Rewards loyalty program. You are rewarded instantly on flights, hotels and packages and you can redeem those rewards instantly on tens of thousands of hotels worldwide.

Their website is very easy to navigate through and you can plan your complete trip including airfare, lodging and a wide variety of activities including tours & sightseeing, cruises and water tours, private tours, day trips and excursions, walking & bike tours, various attractions, food & drink activities like wine and food tastings, adventures of all types, water activities, spa for those that prefer a nice relaxing day and of course all the landmarks, just to name a few. And their prices are very competitive as their search engine searches for the best prices. If you are planning a vacation, Orbitz is a good place to search for prices and ideas. They also accept coupon codes for additional savings.
