More about Lane Bryant

Lane Bryant is an American retail chain focusing on plus-size clothing. It all began back in 1904 with the creative and innovative designs by Lena Himmelstein Bryan Malsin. Lena was a Lithuania immigrant who migrated to New York City in 1895. Upon her arrival to the United States at the age of 16, Lena discovered her family had arranged her to marry a gentleman that paid her passage. She refused to marry him and took a sewing job at a factory that sewed lingerie to support herself.

Lena stopped working as a seamstress after she married David Bryant, a jeweler from Russia in 1898. David died a few years after the birth of their son, and Lena starting working out of her home, tailoring lingerie for new brides and expectant mothers.

She earned enough to open her Fifth Avenue shop in 1904. When she was obtaining a loan from Oriental Bank, her name was misspelled, giving birth to “Lane Bryant”. Bryant soon focused on designing and producing dresses as well as undergarments for pregnant women. Newspapers would not run her ads, as in the early 1900’s “ladies in waiting” were not to appear in public. The New York Herald finally let her run a small ad, and the day the ad was published, she sold out of the maternity dresses.

Bryant and her new husband Albert Malsin launched a survey of female proportions, obtaining data from 200,000 women from an insurance company and measurements from Bryant’s existing customer base. Although the Flapper Era was appearing with styles focusing on the slender, athletic “Gibson Girl”, Bryant and Malsin discovered that half of the female population was made up by ample figured women.

Lane Bryant opened their first retail store in Chicago in 1915, after incorporating a year earlier. Additional stores in Detroit and Brooklyn soon followed. Their mail-order catalog was very successful and in showed sales of more than $1 million in 1917. In 1923 plus-size clothes were out selling maternity wear. Total sales soared to $5 million by this time and Bryant added shoes, hosiery and bathing suits for plus-sizes to their product line.

Lena was said to be a great pioneer in human relations, and Lane Bryant was among the first to offer employees benefit packages including health insurance and profit sharing. The company was left to her sons in 1951, and Raphael and Arthur served as its management until 1982, when Lane Bryant was acquired by the Limited. At this time, they operated 200 stores in 33 states plus another Smart Size stores in six states. Plus-size clothing was a $2 billion market with over 150 manufacturers competing for market share.

Lane Bryant opened about 200 stores in the late 1980’s. They had to close their first store on Fifth Avenue as they lost their lease, therefore moved their headquarters from New York City to a new $110 million complex in Columbus, Ohio in 1990.

Lane Bryant launched their website in 1997 which offered coupons and conducted surveys. They started selling on their website in 2003. They also had their first fashion show in 1997 in New York City.

Today Lane Bryant has over 800 stores across the US. They also market on e-commerce and with their mail-order catalog. Plus-size women can find stylish and chic styles in stores, in catalogs and on their online store. They have a vast selection of all fashionable apparel from jeans, to lingerie, to swimwear and everything in between. They also have shoes and accessories all at competitive prices.
