More About Hertz

Hertz is a subsidiary of Hertz Global Holdings, Inc., and is an American car rental company headquartered in Estero, Florida. Hertz was founded in 1918 by John D. Hertz.

John purchased a Chicago based car rental company in 1923, from Walter L. Jacobs who originally founded the company in Chicago with a dozen Model T Ford cars. He named the company Hertz Drive-Ur-Self and sold controlling interest of the company to General Motors in 1925. Hertz owned The Omnibus Corporation and arranged to purchase the rental car company back from GM in 1953. That same year Omnibus changed their name to “The Hertz Corporation” and went public the following year. During the ownership of GM the company had expanded in the US and internationally having opened a location in France in 1950.

With five years, Hertz became the first car rental company with 1,000 locations. Their theme of a strong commitment to speed and convenience fueled their innovations and that belief is still strong in Hertz today. The advancements of technology in the 1960s and 1970s allowed the company to use computers to simplify and literally speed up the rental process.

Hertz introduced their loyalty program in 1972, the #1 Club, which is still in place today under the name of “Hertz Gold Plus Rewards” which was a computerized data program that allowed members to use Express Service. The program was further enhanced in 1989 to allow members to bypass the airport counter and go directly from the airplane to a Hertz rental car.

Hertz added a NeverLost benefit in the 1990’s by adding on-board navigation system and they also launched their first website in this decade. Hertz was passed through a few owners in its history including RCA, UAL Corporation, Park Ridge Corporation which was owned then by Ford Motor company and later purchased by Volvo. Hertz was put into an initial public offering in 2005 and later that year was sold to private equity companies. The private equity companies took Hertz public on November 16, 2006.

Hertz continued to grow through expansion and acquisitions including the attempt to acquire Dollar-Thrifty Automotive Group in 2010, however that was unsuccessful. They attempted again in 2012 and the merger was complete which would yield combined revenue of $10,200,000,000 and a combined 10,400 locations in approximately 150 countries.

Today, nearly a century later, The Hertz Corporation has a wide portfolio of rental car brands, both on and off airport locations, with over 10,300 locations all over the world. The combination of Hertz, Dollar, Thrifty and Firefly creates the world’s most diverse global car rental company. Consumers looking for a budget-friendly rental the whole family can enjoy, to the customer taking a business trip where ease and speed are the utmost priorities, they have it all.

Their websites are user friendly and you can search, reserve and book online. For deeper savings you can use coupon codes online. Hertz has grown from humble beginnings to a worldwide reputable company and they are the largest worldwide airport general-use car rental brand.
