More about Gap Factory

Gap Factory is a subsidiary of Gap, and is a factory outlet store. The first Gap Outlet was opened in 1994 in Colma, California as part of the new Gap Factory Outlet division. These stores provided Gap merchandise at discounted prices.

Its parent company, the Gap was founded in 1969, by Doris and Don Fisher in San Francisco, California. Their goal was to create a store that was easy for customers and offered a wide selection of sizes and fits, as Don always had issues finding jeans that fit him correctly. Don quickly identified an increasing demand for denim that most retail stores could not meet at this time. The first Gap store was opened with jeans and records to attract the many college students in the San Francisco area. The name Gap came about from the saying generation gap.

The Gap went public in 1976 offering 1.2 million shares of stock on the New York and Pacific Stock exchanges. The Gap originally offered only a wide size assortment of Levis as its main merchandise but over the years had branched out to many different brands and style of clothing, including their own manufactured apparel. They began manufacturing Gap jeans and after a fairly bumpy start with some innovative and aggressive advertising, these jeans began flying off the shelves to their prime market; 14 to 25 year olds. The Gap created a new shopping experience for their customers, which is still popular today as the stores were vibrant in color with a soundtrack of rock and roll beats playing inside. It made shopping for basics fun and the intent was to bring back the shoppers over and over again.

Millard Drexler was hired as Gap president in 1983. The company changed their direction under his management and his vision was to do a full-brand wholesale transformation for Gap. Up to the 1980’s, Gap was known for its draw to younger shoppers, mainly teens. Drexler made some drastic changes by cutting out all other private labels except for Gap clothing exclusively. The new Gap clothing designs kept their fun, casual fashion with classic comfort in mind, and still were denim based, however blouses, pants, shirts, sweaters and skirts were added to the mix. Although they stayed with the fresh, cozy and youthful look, it allowed them to grow their customer base to include a much older crowd.

Today you can find Gap stores all across the nation. And if you are a savvy shopper and love the Gap styles, you can find great prices and a wide variety of Gap fashions at the Gap Factory stores. The Gap Factory has its own online store, separate from the original Gap and this store offers great deals on fashions for women, men, kids, toddlers and babies. It also has a maternity section. Gap Factory has deeper discounts with various sales and offer free shipping specials and accept coupon codes.
