More About Enterprise Car Rentals

Enterprise Rent-A-Car is an American car rental company that is headquartered in the Greater St. Louis area in Clayton, Missouri. The company was founded by Jack Taylor in 1957 as the Executive Leasing Company.

Taylor was not a very compelling candidate for creating such a successful company; he had struggled to finish high school and attended two colleges in one year. He became a fighter pilot for the US Navy during World War II and was witness to losing one-third of his squadron. Like a fighter pilot, Taylor enjoyed a little risk and while working as a salesman at a Cadillac dealership realized his true desire was to be an entrepreneur.

He crunched some numbers when he came into contact with a leasing company and felt the numbers looked promising. He convinced his boss at Lindburg’s Cadillac to open a leasing department by taking a 50 percent cut in pay and gaining a 25 percent share of the leasing business and named it Executive Leasing Company. Taylor eventually changed the name to Enterprise as a salute to the WWII aircraft carrier he served on, the USS Enterprise.

Executive Leasing Company started out with a fleet of seven vehicles and was initially focused on long-term leasing, but Taylor began to see advantages and consumer interest in car rentals, and decided to venture into this market. Taylor felt the paperwork was a hassle for him so turned the reins over to his energetic assistant Don Holtzman. Holtzman had them add ten additional cars and began searching for a marketing niche as they were too small to compete with Hertz and Avis.

He soon discovered that wrecked cars needed rental vehicles to use while they were being fixed and looked to insurance adjusters to serve. Executive Leasing offered more competitive rates than the bigger rental companies and when Holtzman left the company in 1965, Taylor cultivated this market.

In 1969, Taylor began expanding his company beyond St. Louis and renamed the company Enterprise. The national expansion got off to a great start in the early 1970s focusing on body shop and garage owners. Enterprise’s success in all business segments was its great emphasis on customer service. They had a “Customer Giveaway Account” that allowed employees to charge off various items to cater to their business customers, including coffee, donuts, lunch etc.

Enterprise continued expanding and in 1993, entered into the international market by opening an office in Windsor, Canada. By this time the company had more than 1500 locations in the U.S. and over 200,000 rental vehicles. Shortly thereafter they opened an office in Reading, England. In 1995, Enterprise entered the on-airport market opening an office at the Denver International Airport.

Today, Enterprise continues its growth. They have more than 7,200 neighborhood and on-airport locations in over 30 countries. Their strong belief in “Take care of your customers and employees first, and the profits will follow” has followed the company since its humble beginnings. Customer service is still a top priority. You can reserve a rental vehicle on enterprise.com and get a great value on weekend rentals, travel rentals or for any vehicle rental needs. They have very competitive pricing and accept promo codes.
