More about Best Buy

Best Buy is a US electronic retail chain that is headquartered in Richfield, Minnesota. It operates internationally, including outlets in Canada and Mexico. It had operated in China and Europe, however with the merger with Five Star in 2011; they now only operate in North America.

Best Buy was founded in 1966 by Richard Schulze as an audio specialty store specializing in hi-fi stereo equipment and was called the Sound of Music before the name change to Best Buy which took place in 1983. With the name change the emphasis was turned to all consumer electronics. As the Sound of Music, the company had $1 million in revenue and about $58,000 in profits its first year. Although Schulze originally opened the Sound of Music with a partner, he bought out his partner in 1969. At this time they had three stores and became a publically traded company.

In their early years they operated strictly in Minnesota with nine stores by the late 1970’s. In 1981, the Sound of Music store located in Roseville, Minnesota, which was its largest and most profitable store, was hit by a tornado. Although the storeroom was left intact, the tornado had ripped off the roof of the store and completely destroyed the showroom. Schulze came up with a solid idea and decided to have a “Tornado Sale” with the excess and/or damaged stock in his damaged stores parking lot. That four day sale made more money for that store than it did in a typical month.

In 1983 with a total of seven stores and $10 million in annual sales, Sound of Music was renamed Best Buy Company, Inc. They also expanded their product line to include home appliances and VCRs in hopes of adding to their core customer base was which consisted of 15 to 18 year old males. That same year Best Buy opened their first low price high volume business model in Burnsville, Minnesota. This store out-performed all of the other Best Buy stores combined.

In the late 1980’s Best Buy went to their Concept II store plan, which included a more fashionable store with bright lighting, with all of their merchandise being displayed on the sales floors and a no commission sales team. Some appliance manufacturers were not happy that the sales team would not be pushing their products and pulled their items from the store. They, however, returned quickly after Best Buy’s sales and revenues sky-rocketed.

Best Buy acquired many other companies and expanded not only to the west coast but internationally. They of course kept up with the times and re-launched their new and improved website in 2000. Today, their stores all across North America and online generate nearly $40 billion annually. Their mega store concept with a wide selection, no commission and knowledgeable sales staff, their Geek Squad, great customer service and low prices have made them very successful.

If you are looking for any electronics, new gadgets, appliances and vast selection of electronic accessories, Best Buy is the place to go. They have in store and online sales and specials, with their well know rebate offers. And they also accept coupon codes for additional savings.
