Bed Bath and Beyond Inc. operates the largest houseware goods specialty retail stores in the United States. Warren Eisenberg and Leonard Feinstein opened and founded Bed ‘n Bath and Beyond in 1971, with a store called Bed ‘n Bath in Springfield, New Jersey. Both partners possessed over a decade of retail experience and their experience aided in the growth and smart business decisions made for their company. They also both witnessed discount chain stores falling on hard times in the early 1970’s and they both sensed that smaller specialty stores were going to be the next wave in the retail industry. Bed ‘n Bath expanded very quickly in the 1970’s and by 1985 there were 17 Bed ‘n Bath stores in California and the New York metropolitan area. They also opened their first superstore that year to compete with Linens ‘n Things, Pacific Linen, and Luxury Linens.

They soon found out that bigger was definitely proving to be better. As the size of the stores grew, along with the variety of merchandise added to their stores, they changed the name to Bed Bath and Beyond in 1987. With their expansions and larger stores, sales soared to $134 million in 1991, and in 1992 the firm went public. Their new super stores that included a complete line of traditional linens, household furnishings, small appliances, bath products and pretty much everything one needed to play house for real was a great niche for the baby boomers. Bed Bath and Beyond were pioneers for the super store concept.

Bed Bath and Beyond were definite trendsetters and enjoyed tremendous success in the 1990’s. They also added a new computer system in the 1990’s that integrated all of their store sales and inventory and made it easier for mangers to track their sales and inventories. This system also allowed Bed Bath and Beyond to develop and implement a chain-wide bridal registry which would add another 15% to their annual sales. By 1999 Bed Bath and Beyond sales exceed $1 billion.

Today Bed Bath and Beyond are still going strong. They are the nation’s #1 superstore domestics retailer with over 1,000 stores across the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico, along with their profitable online store. They also operate more than 275 stores under the names of World Market, Cost Plus World Market and World Market stores along of 105 buybuy BABY shops, about 80 Christmas Tree Shops, and more than 50 stores under the names Harmon and Harmon Face Values.
