Ashley Furniture Industries is a home furnishings manufacturer and retailer in America that is headquartered in Arcadia, Wisconsin. It was founded in 1945 in Chicago, Illinois by Carlyle Weinberger, but as a sales operation that specialized in wooden occasional furniture built by local companies. In 1970, Ashley Furniture invested in Arcadia Furniture which was founded by Ronald G. Wanek and based in Wisconsin.

Arcadia started out as a small production plant manufacturing Ashley’s lines; however in 1976 Wanek and a group of investors bought out Weinberger and took control of Ashley Furniture. By the mid 1980’s the combined companies, Arcadia and Ashley Furniture had annual sales reaching $12 million and had a product line of about 350 different furniture products. They had changed up their design from heirloom pieces and instead focused more on the middle income buyers. The company’s distributors included big name wholesalers like Levitz Furniture, Sears, K-Mart and Montgomery Ward along with some smaller distributors.

In the 1990’s Ashley Furniture acquired upholstery manufacture Sklar-Peppler and Gengry Furniture. They also branched out into retailing, licensing Ashley Furniture Home Stores to Independent dealers. The chain grew to approximately 40 stores their first year. The small plant in Arcadia, once only 35,000 square feet in 1970, grew to 1,500,000 square feet by the year 2000 and Ashley Furniture Industries employed more people in Arcadia than the town’s population.

Today Ashley Furniture maintains plants across the United States and operates several other factories overseas, including its largest in China. Ron Wanek the Chairman of the Board and Todd Wanek the President and CEO currently own and operate Ashley Furniture Industries as a father and son team. They currently sell their home furnishings and accessories through two distribution channels; independently furniture dealers and more than 500 Ashley Furniture Home Store retail furniture stores and of course their online store.
