More About Alamo Car Rental

Alamo Rent a Car is an American car rental agency based in Clayton, Missouri. It was founded in 1974 in Orlando, Florida and was owned by insurance billionaire John MacArthur.

Alamo began its operation with four lots in Florida and about 1000 vehicles. The name Alamo was chosen to be in a commanding position in telephone classified directories. The company’s marketing plan was based on a discount strategy, with rental prices 20 percent below their larger competitors, offering free mileage and using cheaper locations away from the airports. Michael S. Egan left Florida-based Olins Rent-a-Car to become the Miami-area manager for Alamo in the mid 1970’s.

After MacArthur died, Egan and several others bought Alamo and concentrated on developing markets that were currently overlooked by the more established car rental companies, starting with the vacation travelers. They began courting travel agents and paying them commissions for referrals. The first year under Egan group’s leadership, 1979, sales had reached $30 million and they now operated 11 locations.

In 1980 Alamo ventured beyond Florida entering two major leisure markets by acquiring Trans Rent-A-Car in California and gaining operating rights in Hawaii. They also opened a sales and marketing office in London and in 1981 opened an on-airport facility in Atlanta, Georgia to possibly pursue commercial sales. By the end of 1981 Alamo had 17,000 cars and 600 employees.

They continued their expansion, adding locations to western cities, including Denver, Seattle and Phoenix and eastward into the Boston market. By 1983 Alamo had 1,300 employees. They were still focusing heavily on leisure travelers and ran advertisements promising that “at Alamo, mileage is priceless. Zero cents a mile.”

In 1984 Alamo made a distinct move towards the business market, which accounted for 65 percent of the $4.4 billion a year car rental market. At the time Alamo was contributing $175 million to that market share. Egan wanted to make a show in that market place and was going to rely heavily on his aggressive staff to do this. He had great confidence in his employees with managers recruiting from different sales areas including stock brokerage, retail sales, airline management, the U.S. Navy and even the medical field. They made up a strong, aggressive work force.

Alamo grew rapidly and continued growing and by 1986 it had more than 50,000 cars in 57 cities and 2,500 employees (or family members as they were referred to by the company). And sales exceeded the $300 million mark.

In 1995 Alamo introduces the industry’s first real-time Internet booking engine. This made looking for rates, cars and locations right at the consumer’s fingertips. In 1998 they added E-Process 2000 which gave them electronic reservations links on tour operators’ websites, voucher-less rental processing and electronic billing.

Today, Alamo Rent a Car is the largest car rental provider to international travelers visiting North America. They offer everyday low rental rates and a hassle free customer experience at many popular travel destinations. By joining Alamo Insider, their loyalty program, consumers receive a 5 percent discount off the retail rate. They have over 171 self-serve kiosks at 63 U.S. locations to allow customers fast check-ins to be on the road faster. They also accept Alamo coupon codes on their website for additional savings.
