More About Shop.ca

Shop.ca is a Canadian e-commerce site that is set up as a multi-merchant marketplace. It is now owned by Transformation Capital as of July 14, 2016. The original founders of SHOP.CA were Drew Green and Trevor Newell in 2011 and it is headquartered in Toronto, Ontario.

Drew and Trevor were childhood friends. They were both born in Toronto in the same month and the same year. They were fast friends along with their families and spent summer camps together and even took a family trip to Disney World together. As they grew, they went their separate ways with Green studying kinesiology and Newell opting for a business administration degree.

Green later found himself swept up in the dot.com boom and by 2005, he was a senior vice president at an American online comparison-shopping website called Shop.com. This would serve as a model for Shop.ca.

In 2010, Green and Newell reconnected. They were both interested in starting e-commerce ventures. Green was interested in a site like Amazon for Canada and Newell was drawn to rewards and loyalty programs. They put their plans together and came up with Shop.ca, quitting their jobs in 2011 to pursue their dream on a full time basis.

They launched Shop.ca in July 2012. Their office was in a 1600 square foot loft downtown. The staff worked long hard hours, coming in early and not leaving until 8 or 10 p.m. at night. The two partners were definitely opposites in looks. Green was described looking like “the host of a wild party, the morning after”. He was tall with a scraggly beard and circles under his eyes. While Newell was clean-shaven and a Cub Scout leader. Green, the charismatic salesman, built relationships and signed deals with merchants and marketers, while Newell worked behind the scenes.

Shop.ca had no warehouses and didn’t ship any products. They were set up as a pure play marketplace. They signed up the retailers, brands and distributors where the merchants handled listing their products, inventory and shipping. Shop.ca assisted where necessary with customer service but took a cut of every sale. They had a virtual inventory of over 15 million items across 4,000 brands including big names like Samsung, Sony, Fila and Miele, with 850 retailers represented.

Green ended up retiring in October 2014, which was extremely difficult on the company as he was said to be the heart and soul of Shop.ca. In July of 2016, a newly formed private equity firm called Transformation Capital acquired Shop.ca and the company’s assets.

Today, you can find a multitude of products on Shop.ca. It is stocked with apparel and accessories for women, men, kids, and babies, home décor, electronics, health and beauty products, jewellery and watches, toys, auto parts, sporting goods and the list goes on. They strive to be Canada’s number one online shopping destination and offer free standard shipping and free returns. They have many sales, specials and promotions and accept online coupon codes.
