More About Patagonia Canada

Patagonia, Inc. is an American clothing retailer that showcases and sells clothing; mainly durable outdoor clothing. The company is headquartered in Ventura, California and was founded by Yvon Chouinard in 1973.

Chouinard, an accredited rock climber began selling climbing gear in 1957, through Chouinard Equipment. He saw a need for a different piton, as the ones available for purchase were made of soft iron, and after placing them, they had to be left in the rock. A multi-day ascent in Yosemite required hundreds of piton placements. Chouinard decided to make his own reusable hardware, and went to junkyard to buy forging equipment and taught himself how to be a blacksmith.

He originally made the pitons for personal use, but word spread quickly and soon his pitons were in high demand from fellow rock climbers. He was selling them out of the back of his car. There was too high demand for his climbing gear, and he partnered with Tom Frost and began making equipment with tool and die machines instead of by hand. By the 1970’s Chouinard Equipment was the largest supplier of climbing hardware in the U.S.

Clothing for outdoors and climbers were fairly dull in the late sixties. Active wear was basically grey sweatshirts and pants, with climbing wear in summer being tan cut-off chinos and cheap white dress shirts. On a trip to Scotland in the winter of 1970, Chouinard bought a regulation team rugby shirt for rock climbing. It was built rugged to withstand the rigors of rugby and had a high enough collar to keep the hardware slings from cutting into his neck. It was blue, with red and yellow stripes across the center. When he returned back to the states, his climbing friends wanted to know where they could that type of shirt.

Yvon ordered a few shirts and they sold fast. He couldn’t keep them in stock. They ordered more and added additional outdoor wear to their line of clothing. They eventually wanted to separate the clothing business from the hardware business and they came up with the name, Patagonia, as to Yvon it conjured up romantic visions of glaciers, and jagged peaks, gauchos and condors. In 1989, due to pending lawsuits, Chouinard Equipment was forced into bankruptcy. However, this gave Yvon a complete focus on Patagonia.

Patagonia has introduced many clothing ideas to the rock climbing industry, including insulating long underwear made of polypropylene, which doesn’t absorb water, and pile sweaters used by Atlantic fishermen because it insulated without absorbing moisture. They also have made many changes throughout the years like switching to organic cottons and developing recycled polyester to aid in conserving the environment.

Today Patagonia has 53 stores around the world and a lot of other retailers sell their products. They have a few stores and outlets in Canada along with a thriving website. They branched out to many other sports including skiing, snowboarding, surfing, fly fishing, trail running, mountain biking and of course still carry clothing for climbing. You can find all of your outdoor clothing needs for men, women and kids and babies, along with duffel bags, backpacks, water bottles, books, sleeping bags, and DVDs at their outlets or on their website. They have great sales and accept coupons in store and coupon codes on their website.
