More About Old Navy Canada

Old Navy is an American clothing and accessories retailing chain owned by American multinational corporation Gap, Inc. The first Old Navy store was opened in Colma, California in 1994.

Old Navy’s parent company Gap, Inc was founded in 1969. It had stunning success and grew rapidly. Millard Drexler was appointed president of the Gap in 1983. He spent a decade experimenting with different retail concepts to further grow this company. Old Navy was Drexler’s own creation. He had kept a close eye on the Target and Mervyn’s retail chains and was very interested in their plans to introduce a new chain of retail outlets that basically was a cheaper version of the Gap. He felt they maybe knew something he didn’t.

He decided to act on this idea and asked his assistants to go on shopping sprees and purchase merchandise in the $10 range from other retail chains. With the products purchased laid out across the tables of their boardroom, he put his associates to work, looking for ways to make these styles cheaper. They went to overseas garment factories and began production.

They implanted the sales of this merchandise under the banner of “Gap Warehouse” and it was an instant success. The sales records during the first few weeks convinced Drexler and his team that this lower-priced concept deserved its own identity. Drexler came up with Old Navy, which was the name of a bar he had seen during a visit to Paris.

Within one year of opening its first store, the chain had expanded to 59 stores and revenues of $120 million. Customers were literally flocking to Old Navy stores and they expanded further and by 1999 they were operating 131 stores with sales over $420 million.

In April 1999, Jenny Ming was appointed Old Navy’s president. Under her leadership, Old Navy continued to expand, and although their store count was only 16% of the parent company stores, Old Navy’s revenue was contributing 30% of the sales revenue.

In 2001, Old Navy made its international debut with a great push. They opened 12 stores in the province of Ontario. They continued to expand in Canada and today there are 75 stores across Canada and they have their Canadian website www.oldnavy.ca.

Old Navy is known for their signature denim wall of styles that never change. Their styles are super skinny, skinny, original and boot-cut. All of the styles are available in four different washes. Most stores have seven different sections: women’s, men’s, girls, boys, toddler girl, toddler boy and baby.

Old Navy still has great styles for women, men and kids with a great selection and very affordable prices. They have many sales and specials in their stores and on their website. For even additional savings, you can take advantage of coupon codes.
