More about Indigo & Chapters

Indigo Books & Music, Inc. is Canada’s largest book, gift and specialty toy retailer. It was founded in 1996 by its current CEO, Heather Reisman in Ontario, Canada.

Reisman’s interest in opening a big box bookstore was fueled by the success and market share dominance Borders was enjoying across the border in the United States. She opened her first store on September 4, 1997 in Burlington, Ontario. Her dream to be the largest book retailer in Canada was put to the test as Larry Stevenson had a similar goal and entered the market with the same plan as Reisman and founded Chapters.

By the end of the 1990’s Reisman was operating 14 Indigo superstores and opened a new 100,000 square-foot facility north of Toronto. And Reisman and Stevenson went head to head to battle for the number one market share holder and the best and largest bookstore in Canada. Chapters had acquired a couple other bookstores and launched their online store, modeled after the Amazon website. Indigo also has launched their own website. Chapters seemed to be winning the battle as being the larger of the two chains; however Indigo was drawing in a lot of business because of their unique format of being a superstore bookstore with a large culture influence.

Reisman announced her plans to acquire Chapters in the early 2000’s. The merger was complete in 2001, giving Indigo the number one spot for market share for bookstore retailers in Canada. In 2004, Indigo started the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation. This program helps to provide new books and learning materials to elementary schools with high-needs. Indigo supports this program with $1.5 million annually to schools across Canada.

Today, Indigo owns and operates 90 superstores under the banners Chapters and Indigo and 126 small format stores under the names Coles, Indigospirit, SmithBooks and the Book Company. Indigo remains the last remaining national bookstore chain in Canada. They operate in all ten provinces and one territory and through their lucrative website www.chapters.indigo.ca. Their superstores average over 22,000 square feet and are designed to entice the culture-seekers by offering rousing environment to explore and browse. Their smaller stores are generally located in retail shopping centres, street-front retail sites, major airports and in central business districts.

Indigo has two different loyalty programs to reward their repeat customers and offers discounts, point systems to achieve free merchandise, invitation to special events and personalized inspirational book and product recommendations. They have over 500,000 book titles available and they support eReading with the Kobo service. They also have an array of specialty proprietary gifts available.

Indigo expanded their Indigo Kids department, which enlightens kids with a focus on books, creative play and specialty toys. They also offer a free in-store gift wrap for kid’s gifts.

If you are a book lover, Indigos stores and website is filled with books for all types of readers. You can browse through many titles and genres and find just what you are looking for. They also have toys, baby items, home décor, electronics, fashion gifts, bath and body gift sets, jewellery, sleep and loungewear and fashion accessories. And if you can’t decide on that perfect gift, you can always get a gift card. They do accept coupons in their stores and promo codes on their website.
