More About Dell Canada

Dell is a multinational computer technology company that manufactures, sells and repairs personal computers (PCs), servers, data storage devices, network switches, computer software, computer peripherals, HD televisions, cameras, printers and electronics built by other manufacturers. The company was founded in 1984 by Michael Dell who was 19 at the time, in Austin, Texas.

The company began from Michael’s dorm room at the University of Texas as PC’s Limited, with $1,000 vested capital from his family he began selling IBM PC compatible computers. Michael’s concept for his company was to gain a better understanding of consumers needs by selling PC’s directly to the customer. By eliminating the middleman, this allowed Dell to gain perspective on his customers’ expectations and the availability to sell his product a lower price.

In June of 1985, Dell produced its first of many to follow, computer of its own design. It was a 10 megabyte Turbo PC, which sold for $795 which undercut his biggest competitor, IBM. PC Week raved about this computer and soon the company was selling 1,000 machines per month.

In 1986, Michael hired Lee Walker, a 44 year old retired investment banker and venture capitalist, as President and CEO, to assist in implementing Dell’s ideas and to be a well seasoned mentor. Walker reorganized the management staff and was instrumental in obtaining a $10 million line of credit from a bank for Dell, along with recruiting members for the board of directors when the company went public in 1988. The name change from PC’s Limited to Dell Computer Corporation was initiated that same year.

Dell grew and by 1987 their factory was producing 7,000 computers per month. Their earnings had skyrocketed and they had $70 million in annual sales and showed a net income of $2.1 million. In 1989 the company introduced their first laptop computer, the 316LT.

In 1995 Dell expands worldwide operations in Canada and other parts of America, Europe, Asia, and Japan. They launched their first of many websites in 1996, which generated $1 million in sales per day just six months after it went live. By the end of 1999, Dell is ranked No. 1 in PC’s in the United States for large and medium sized businesses and No. 1 worldwide for workstation shipments.

Dell Canada, Inc. is a subsidiary of Dell International LLC. Today, the company is lead by Kevin Peesker, President and Bruce Melhuish CFO. They are headquartered in North York, Ontario. They engage in the design, development, manufacture, marketing sale and support of desktop products, notebooks, servers and storage devices in Canada.
