More About Amazon

Amazon Canada is an e-commerce retailer, based out of the United States but has separate retail websites for Canada, United Kingdom, France, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Germany, Brazil, Australia, Japan, India, Mexico, China and of course the United States. It is the largest and most profitable internet-based retailer in the world with both total sales and market capitalization.

Amazon was founded in Seattle, Washington in July 1994 by Jeff Bezos. It originally started as an online bookstore, but later added to their product line offering DVDs, Blu-rays, CDs, video, MP3 and audiobook downloads and streaming, video games, software, electronics, apparel, furniture, toys, jewelry and food. His first website debut was Amazon.com in 1995. By 1997, Bezos took his company public and became the first internet retailer to secure one million customers.

Amazon was a pioneer of Internet commerce and Amazon.com strived to set the standard for website businesses. Bezos worked on this goal, and implemented many updates and changes to make his website as user friendly as possible and relating the site to match the sophistication of all of his customers’ technology skills. He also made his merchandise extremely affordable which kept customers returning to Amazon.

Amazon had a slow start in growth in its early years, and stockholders were concerned about the company not showing profits soon enough and didn’t believe they would survive long term. When the dot.com bubble burst at the beginning of the 21st century, many e-companies were destroyed, but Amazon survived and grew. Amazon showed its first profit in the fourth quarter of 2001. Amazon changed up their strategy and began their third-party deals with popular retailers, like Target, Toysrus.com, Circuit City Stores and Borders, and these third party deals were very lucrative.

Amazon launched its apparel retailer in 2002, including clothing from retailers The Gap and Lands’ End. By the end of the 4th quarter in 2002, the firm showed a $3 million quarterly profit, its second net profit in its history. Although there were skeptics about the company’s success, Bezos was convinced he had a sure thing with Amazon. They continued their growth and added more merchandise to their line and additional third party retailers and also acquiring many other companies.
