More About 1800Flowers.ca

1-800-Flowers.ca is a Canadian website that retails floral and gourmet foods in Canada. This online store is owned and was founded by James McCann.

McCann started in the flower business back in the 1970’s when he was looking for a way to make some extra money and took a part time job at a flower shop in Upper East Side in New York. He had no idea that this side job would be the stepping stone for a multimillion dollar floral empire. He opened his first flower shop, Flora Plenty, in New York City in 1976.

By 1986, he owned and operated several flower shops in New York City. The phone number 1-800-356-9377 (1-800-Flowers) was originally a trucking brokerage number in Wisconsin that was used until 1981. Granville Semmes and David Snow formed a corporation in 1982 and began selling flowers using that number, however their business struggled. The number and the assets of the company were subsequently acquired by James Poage and John Davis of Texas. They also struggled financially and in 1986 McCann acquired the assets of that company including the phone number.

McCann was already making people smile with his floral deliveries, and his attention to quality, service and a competitive price had ensured repeat customers. He used this to transform his newly acquisition of a failing flower business into a blooming endeavor, and began marketing the delivery the sale of floral deliveries by telephone using 1-800-Flowers. He launched BloomNet which was his own network of florists in 1988. To put his floral business above his competition Jim offered his customers a seven-day freshness guarantee as well as a 100 percent satisfaction guarantee. He also rewarded his repeat customers by establishing a Frequent Flowers Club. His biggest competitor FTD also launched their own phone marketing floral delivery; however their service lost about $13 million during this time while 1-800-Flowers had generated $100 million in annual sales by 1993.

1-800-Flowers entered the e-commerce retail environment in 1992. Within five years the website was named in the top 100 by PC Magazine, and it was bringing in 10 percent of the company’s annual sales.

1-800-Flowers ventured to delivering more than just beautiful floral arrangements. Over the years they have added many products to their line including fine chocolates, gourmet fruit and gift baskets, gourmet cookies, and a variety of other gifts.

Today, 1800Flowers.ca is a thriving e-commerce site based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Their website is full of floral designs, plants and gourmet food baskets for any occasion. They offer same-day delivery on many of their arrangements, so if you just remembered that special occasion a birthday, anniversary, graduation or just need an “I’m sorry” to get you out of the dog house, you can find on 1800Flowers.ca. They still use the highest quality of flowers and florists and still honor that 100% Smile Guarantee.
